Caravane, la grande pédalée

An infallible sign that cycling is becoming mainstream in a community is when you see minority demographics (i.e. racial, age, gender or other), getting involved, being empowered and taking ownership of the cycling habit.

Instead of contributing to discrimination, racial divisions, top-down attitudes, social exclusion and racism as seems to be the case in places such as Portland, it looks like cycling is bringing all sorts of demographics to mingle in Montreal streets. Older Asian men, black women riding with children, penniless students as well as well-off business people, more and more of the folks are joining in.

A while ago, I came across an organisation dedicated to contributing to this trend: Caravane.
"Caravane’s mission is to promote cycling, not only as a viable, economical and environmentally friendly mode of transportation, but also as a tool for developing rich social and cultural networks."
There can be many obstacles to joining the bicycle culture, especially for new immigrants. At the heart of their activities is the effort to overcome these obstacles by:

  • Providing information to newcomers about the ease and security of cycling in the city
  • Helping newcomers learn to ride safely
  • Dispelling the fears that newcomers often have about cycling in the city – namely, fears about safety, operation, and connotations about social status
  • Offering a more affordable mode of transportation
  • Fostering cultural understanding and exchanges by using the bicycle as a tool to make connections with people
  • Integrating the city’s neighbourhoods
  • Bridging the isolation of newcomers to the city
  • Providing newcomers with ways to create networks

Summer in Winter

As all of you East coasters have probably noticed by now, we have somehow skipped Spring to jump straight into Summer. Crazy!
Of course, this is not gonna last, next week we'll be down into the 10 degrees again. Yet, we've hit the 23 degrees, top record for a day in March!

So this weekend, we went out and as expected, all the fair weather cyclists were out and about, along with anyone fed up with winter coats, gloves, hats, scarves etc.

Some images.

Once past McGill University campus, onto Parc Avenue up to the Tam-Tams where a community of Montreal's drumming folks gather every Sunday morning.

On the East side of the road, the bike path, crowded with everything except cyclists.

My bicycle, getting some sun, enjoying the weather (Yeah, that's Po Campo bag right there along with a sucky Nantucket basket that I do not recommend).

Hubby's old love transportation bike.

 Drummers at it.

Then back to serious business...

Which means rounding off the day with nice sandwiches (forgot to take pictures) and lovely mango-lychee smoothies.

Who said you can't ride AND eat all at the same time?
With a basket, yes you can!

Montreal's BIXI anthem

Da Grytions rocks the casbah! Totally hilarious!!!
I only found out about this very recently, can you believe this? Well of course, when one does not watch TV, what can you expect...

By the way, this is *very* old news... They're talking about keeping BIXI  as a year round thing. Now THAT's a really good idea to increase winter cycling... I would use it if it were available in the winter...

Christmas preps on Mont Royal Av.

After some serious training to ensure they can complete their run on time...

The Christmas elves have started collecting children's letters. Some more this week-end and they'll go back to the north pole to get all of these gifts ready for the big day...

(Man, this is so silly I can't believe I am actually writing this!)
All of this at the Metro Mont Royal, courtesy of the borough.

In the Ghetto

In the last post, I had quite an outburst of vulgarities and curses.
Hum, well I am not apologizing. I admit it was not very elegant but hey, this not a column here, it's a blog, a private one at that. And the issue was quite serious. I am totally bewildered by the level of incompetency we have to put up with sometimes.

Well, this post will be a lighter and nicer one. A photo-balade through the Ghetto.
When I was still in U, this used to be the name of the residential area around the McGill campus. That, of course, was in the days before the regressive ban on cycling around campus.

All photos random. Taken around 3 pm, outside of rush hour. Comments to a minimum. All right, let's start!

University St. corner with Milton.

University St. bike path, going down towards Sherbrooke St.
Notice the shitty road quality. This city is crumbling apart really.

Bixi station on Milton St.

Corner of Milton St. and Parc Av.

The Montreal Urban Ecology Centre.

Looking onto Prince Arthur St. (I think) westward.

This below is the reason why painted lanes are absolute bullshit.

Another Bixi station, only one or two blocks away from the one above.

A serie of random shots in the area, i.e. I can't remember where!

This lane below branches out from the renovated Des Pins interchange but I never figured out where to take it!

Finally, back to McGill's Eastern entrance, corner of Milton St. and University St., exactly where I had the car in bike-box incident.

Make no mistake...

Even though it looks like they relate to the construction work next to it, the real point of the wire fence is to prevent/discourage cycling through campus...

At the market

The other day, on the last stretch of my run, I got to Jean Talon market and noticed this sign:

This is what the sign is referring to: bike parking.

Of course, this parking has been there for a good while now. But it is always nice to see it officialised and institutionalised.

And then surprise! What do I see:

Geez... change is creeping on me!
Are the days of the rattling clunkers counted? NOT!

Few minutes of random bike path traffic

I posted myself at the corner of Ontario St. and Berri St. and filmed these random minutes, few hours before rush hour. There is a protected bike path on the forefront, where the cyclists come and go; we do not see the details of it because I posted myself at the corner.

Hey, I know this video is shitty quality but gives an idea...
Enjoy!

Along the Claire Morissette

Back to Montreal and its cycle paths.
On my way to Canadian Tire, I took those pictures: random day, at random hour, for a random errand.
The easiest route is through de Maisonneuve bike path a.k.a the Claire Morissette bike path.

So, we start on the René-Lévesque path all the way from under Jacques Cartier bridge to Berri St. corner.

Up Berri St.

Turned left onto de Maisonneuve St
Corner of Sanguinet St. (I think). Anyways, always blasting that red!

Nearing St Laurent St. a.k.a. The Main, red light District...

On Place des Arts,

Where stupid design,

Encourages pedestrians to walk on the path.

This must be Bleury St.

Hum, University St.?

So, I am pretty sure this is McGill College

 Peel St.

Drummond St.

Crescent St.

Bishop St. or Mackay St.?

Nearing Concordia University bike parking,

In front of the John Molson School of Business, girl with set of tires. Ah! Memories... Of both carrying similar load in similar fashion AND attending said school... Oh well, time flies.

Somewhere before Atwater,

There we are.

Terminus, tout le monde descend!
